Press release of the 23d February 2010

Granupro 2010 - second forum français des granulés biocombustibles - 19/21 mai à LyonGRANUPRO 2010 : second French Pellet Forum

Trends and developments of a green biofuel

Kyoto protocol, European 20-20-20 targets, the « Grenelle de l’environnement » in France, at every level, energy savings and renewables are in the core measures for climate protection strategies. In Europe and France, 66% of renewable energy originates from biomass and this is going to double in the next 10 years to reach the targets.

Within the biomass sector, pellet is the fastest growing market. From a very low level in the early 21st century, pellets are now dealing with a 80% growth rate for the 10 past years in Europe(1) and the French production increased by 35 times(2) !

Pellets spearhead the green energy business growth.

The 19th, 20th and 21st May, Lyon will welcome the second French Pellet Forum. The event will gather the key players on topics like development and supplying strategies, new resources for pelleting, exports, production technologies or even on the environmental benefits of this bioenergy fuel. More as 400 people from France and Europe will meet during two days, the 19th and 20th May at « espace Double Mixte » on the « Campus de la Doua » in Lyon-Villeurbanne. The 2010 conference will be translated French<->English to enrich cross-European discussions and welcome an international audience. About 3500 professionals are expected to visit the exhibition being held in the same time, from Wednesday the 19th to Friday the 21st May, in order to increase professional networking between pellet producers, energy equipment manufacturers, planning offices, retailers and fitters.

Friday the 21st May, Rhônalpénergie-Environnement organises a conference for local authorities with support from the Région Rhône-Alpes. Communities are the third emerging pellets market too – compared to the domestic and industrial markets. Advantages here are that investment and maintenance costs for biomass heating systems are lowered.

What attracts consumers and professionals to this green biofuel ?

Not only attractive prices and environmental benefits, but also because its simple to use !

Pellets are the only solid biofuels you can deliver with pump-lories as it is done for oil delivery, plus the full automatic feeding of the boiler.

Pellets are also the most energetic solid biofuels. Transportation, packaging and storage are thus a lot easier.

Moreover, pellets have to be produced with standard-compliant processes. Like oil, pellets can be used worldwide with the same characteristics.

And last point, again like oil, pellets are international, which means to face global competition but in the same time guarantees a great economical stability in a context where resources for its production are largely under exploited.

Its in this background, that the French pellet sector invested a few hundreds millions € in less than 7 years(3).

GRANUPRO 2010 has set up in Région Rhône-Alpes because it is France’s leading region regarding pellet production and number of stoves and boilers installed. Many big French companies have their headquarter there and so does PROPELLET France, the French pellet promotion association and partner of the event which will take place on the « campus de la Doua », in partnership with INSA of Lyon and its sister company, INSAVALOR.
